Italian navy rescues 1,000 migrants from Mediterranean

Some 1,000 migrants aboard nine boats have been rescued by the Italian coast over the past days. The boats had left North Africa and were heading to the Italian island of Lampedusa, whose inhabitants have been nominated as candidates for the Nobel Peace Prize for the solidarity shown in dealing with the thousands of migrants who reach their island each year.
